Curated by NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington and featuring an exciting assemblage of musicians, this debut performance will celebrate the recent publication of New Standards, a songbook featuring lead sheets by 101 women composers, the first of its kind. Featuring the work of Alice Coltrane, Courtney Bryan, Geri Allen, Anat Cohen, Maria Schneider, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Mimi Jones, Nubya Garcia, Nicole Mitchell as well as by emerging artists from the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, the New Standards songbook is “a much needed ‘flashlight’ and ‘earphone’ into a treasure trove of composers” (Wayne Shorter).

Next Jazz Legacy is a new national apprenticeship program for women and non-binary improvisers in jazz, and a more inclusive jazz future. This performance celebrates a monumental first year of the program and features all seven inaugural awardees:  Ivanna Cuesta (Drums), Lexi Hamner (Vocals/Trombone), Keyanna Hutchinson (Guitar), Alexis Lombre (Piano/Keys), Anastassiya Petrova (Keys/Piano), Loke Risberg (Guitar) and Kalia Vandever (Trombone).

Next Jazz Legacy is a partnership between New Music USA and the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice with support from the Mellon Foundation. The program has been featured by the Kennedy Center, PBS NewsHour, WBGO, DownBeat, and more.
